“Woolly Pleasures”
“Isn't it awful that cold feet make for a cold imagination and that a pair of woollen socks induce good thoughts!”
Quote by Frank Grillparzer
Over the Christmas holidays my knitting needles have been clattering non-stop over the 2 week period.
When knitting I get into the flow and my mind chatter settles down. But did you know that busying yourself with yarn and needle can actually improve your health? Research conducted by Knit For Peace a U.K. nonprofit organization, noted both physical and mental health benefits such as lower blood pressure and cortisol levels as well as reduced depression and anxiety. Apparently knitting is as relaxing as yoga and produces tangible results that foster self-esteem.
I must be glowing right now after knitting 6 pairs in quick succession. There’s a sock to fit everyone in the family. From a women’s size 7 to a men’s 9. The lighter coloured ones are made from delicate 100% pure alpaca yarn. The chunkier grey ones are more robust and machine washable. 75% natural wool with 25% nylon for durability.
5 Reasons why I love hand knitted socks:
Not one pair is truly identical.
Wool on your feet is, contrary to common belief, super comfortable, temperature regulating, non-itchy and odor resistant.
The wearer cherishes his socks, knowing the work that went into making them and will think about mending rather than discharging them as soon as they show signs of wear and tear.
Eventually the wool can be recycled for a different use.
And finally, paired with the right outfit they can be very stylish. (If you disagree like my lovely family members who refuse to wear them out in the open, just wear them in the privacy of your own home to warm your feet on a wintery Sunday afternoon)
If you happen to be an avid knitter and your cupboards are overflowing with creations that you haven’t been able to gift to anyone, you can do good by donating them to the forementioned organization Knit for Peace. Have a look at their website to see all the amazing work they do.
